Green Spots

Growing Minds in Outdoor ClassroomsGreen Spots Program

HAT is providing schools, teachers and students with the resources to create an outdoor nature classroom for hands on learning opportunities.

Our goal is to connect youth with nature, and to link schools and neighbourhoods to nearby natural areas. The project provides free, fun activities and outdoor nature classrooms for grades K-7.

  • With the students, we plan and plant a native species outdoor nature classroom on the school grounds.
  • We offer workshops and training for teachers to help them get outside and use the garden and natural areas around the school as part of their classroom.
  • We connect teachers with trained volunteer naturalists who are keen to co-lead exploration field trips on and around the school grounds.

These gardens are an outdoor classroom where the children can learn about local flora and fauna, soil processes, ecosystems, and other subjects such as art, music, writing, and math on school property.

After the naturescape garden is in place, our goal is to ensure it is used by the teachers and students on a regular basis. We provide lesson suggestions, resources, and ideas to help this happen.

These free programs are made possible thanks to our sponsors: Vancity and the BC Government.
